With the continuous advancements and breakthroughs in technology, the medical field has been able to capitalize on these technological advancements and provide a variety of cosmetic procedures and surgeries that are mainly concerned with the improvement of one’s physical appearance. However, facial surgeries aren’t the only cosmetic procedures available today that women are given with. A cosmetic surgery that involves the reduction of the excess skin in a woman’s labia minora is also carried out by cosmetic surgeons and professionals.

This particular form of treatment is known as Labiaplasty surgery. The first ever labiaplasty operation involved amputation or cutting off of the excess labia minora. However, this proved to be wrong later on as it caused problems to arise both in the appearance and the function of the genital part. These problems included super tight vaginal openings, irregularities, and pigmentation problems and so on. As a result, other technique on operating with the labia was developed. The wedge excision procedure became widely famous and addressed the issues of color conditions and irregularities. Though the procedure wasn’t at all successful as the risk for scar shortening and breakdown and opening of wounds have arisen in the process.

Experts later redefined the wedge excision and called it a Z-plasty. With the Z-plasty wedge excision, the excess labia to be cut off in a zig-zage pattern so that it prevents any unnatural tightening on the skin as well as notching and wound breakdown from occurring. Labiaplasty surgery costs roughly around $3000 to $5000 which is somewhat expensive for an average earner. The cost includes the surgeon’s charges, the fees for the operating room, and the anesthesia to be administered. The anesthesia used in labiaplasty is a general anesthesia or sedation. The procedure can be performed in the physician’s clinic or office or in a medical hospital. The length of surgery is an estimated 30 minutes depending on how well the procedure goes.

Typically, people undergoing labiaplasty surgery can expect to go home during the same day of the operation. Furthermore, they should expect to feel mild to moderate discomforts. Professional doctors make use of long-effecting local anesthesia during labiaplasty so that post-operation discomforts are lowered. One should expect 2 to 5 days of prescription medication and ice packs for pain relief. Certain activities including sexual intercourse and exercises will be restricted for weeks before the patient is able to carry out these activities without any discomforts or side effects from occurring.

Laser surgery is very versatile and it is being used on an increasingly regular basis. Many practitioners are choosing to replace traditional techniques with laser techniques because they tend to be quicker, safer, more effective and more accurate.

When is laser surgery used?

Laser surgery can be used for a whole host of different medical, cosmetic, dental and ophthalmic procedures, from laser eye surgery and tooth whitening to snoring treatment. Lasers are becoming increasingly popular and they provide benefits for both patients and professionals. Many dental patients, for example, are worried about having injections and incisions in their mouth and the laser eradicates the need for these, which can make the patient feel much more comfortable about the procedure.

Laser surgery for women

Laser surgery can be used in many different procedures and it is becoming increasingly popular, as the demand for cosmetic treatments and services increases. In recent years, facial treatments have become extremely popular, with many people choosing to have treatment to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and restore their youthful looks. Lasers can be used to rejuvenate the skin and are a popular technique because many people are worried about having invasive treatment. Laser treatments are not usually painful and treatment is very quick and simple.

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is also proving a very effective treatment for women. Most people associate excessive hair growth with men but many women also suffer from excess facial and body hair. Excess hair can cause people to suffer from low self-esteem and they may feel uncomfortable in public. Laser hair removal can be used to remove hair from many different body parts and provides a long-term solution for excessive hair growth. Laser hair removal removes hair for good, unlike other hair removal techniques, such as waxing, shaving or epilating.

Varicose vein treatment

Varicose veins and thread veins are a common problem, especially amongst older women. Varicose veins can be unsightly and this may make people may feel self-conscious. Some people may choose not to have treatment but there are treatment options, including laser surgery varicose veins treatment, available. Lasers are used to heat up the vein and then seal it shut.

Snoring

Snoring is more prevalent in males but it can also affect women as well. Surgery is not usually carried out for snoring unless all other remedies have been tried and it is usually considered as a last resort. Laser surgery can be used to treat snoring, but as with other surgical treatments for snoring, there is no guarantee that it will be successful.

Seventh cranial nerve palsy also known as facial nerve palsy is due to birth trauma and results in the loss of voluntary movement of muscles in the child’s face. This controllable muscle loss is due to pressure on the facial nerve and occurs either just before or at the time the baby is delivered.

One of the problems with this birth trauma is that most of the time the cause is unknown. However if the delivery is difficult irrespective of whether forceps have been used to assist the condition can occur.

Birth trauma or birth injury can be brought on by the following factors.

Firstly, if the baby is on the large size. Secondly, if the pregnancy or the labour has been long. Thirdly, if an epidural has been utilised and fourthly if there has been medication used to bring on labour or to provide the mother with stronger contractions to ease the birth.

It has to be pointed out however that most of the time these aforementioned factors do not actually lead to facial nerve palsy or birth trauma.

In its most common form, facial nerve palsy due to birth trauma will only involve the lower part of the facial nerve. It is this part that controls the muscles around the lips. When the infant cries the muscle weakness will be mostly noticed.

Expectant parents will work hard to ensure their baby is protected fully after birth. The home will be subjected to preparation that will include a safe room for baby to sleep in and the purchase of safe and suitable toys for play times.

Sadly there is the problem of birth trauma. This can occur when medical professionals make errors during childbirth and derail the parents’ dreams and wishes before such time as the baby is taken home.

Medical procedures will carry a certain level of risk to any patient in any circumstance and in the case of birth the professionals have the responsibility to monitor very closely a pregnant woman through the months and explain the possible risks that can be involved with the birth of a child.

Birth trauma can be caused by injuries as a result of poor or perhaps inaccurate diagnosis during check-ups during pregnancy. There might also be injuries occurring during the birthing process. Some injuries may have a serious effect on mother or baby or both and could result in lasting issues with their health or even disability.

Birth trauma could also arise from last minute C sections or mishandling of the baby during childbirth or even medication afterwards

When a pregnancy is confirmed especially if it is the prospective mother’s first one all sorts of feelings will run through her mind. The prospect of bringing another life into the world is not only exciting but certainly very surreal for the parents-to-be. The giving of birth to another human being is without doubt an absolute miracle and when everything goes according to plan then even better especially when the baby is born healthy and happy. Sadly however there is such a thing as birth trauma. Some mothers experience complications during childbirth and this can result in any number of devastating outcomes. Sometimes the follow on from this birth trauma can affect the lives of everyone involved.

Even though thousands of babies are born every year with no complications it is important to be aware of problems that could potentially compromise your child’s well being.

Some natural causes for birth trauma include a premature birth where the mother starts labour before the 37th week of pregnancy, abnormally large babies – those over 8lb 13ozs for example and breeched deliveries where the baby is in an abnormal position in the womb (usually feet first).

On the brighter side of things these are common causes for birth trauma and doctors can reduce the risks even under special circumstances.

Birth trauma believe it or not is something that most people take for granted. They are under the impression that birth trauma simply means difficulty with the actual birth such as a problematical journey through the birth canal. What is not generally known is that all the pressures of birth and the interactions of mother and baby for delivery are totally fundamental to health.

Obviously there are times when obstacles during birth are definitely not positive and result in difficulties and worse, injuries to mother or baby or both. Not all birth trauma needs to happen and unfortunately there are standard birthing room procedures that many hospitals conform to that can actually contribute to the creation of birth traumas and are absolutely unnecessary.

Treatment for the problem that is birth trauma becomes most effective when it is performed as soon as possible after the occurrence of the trauma. Seemingly the longer the wait before treatment starts then the more prolonged is the process of recovery.

There is such a thing as the TARA approach. This is a subtle energy medicine system of healing having special designs for the treatment of birth trauma in babies, children and adults.

It is a sad but true fact that not all births go to plan. Some mothers who may have experienced a difficult labour and delivery may have found it extremely hard to come to terms with their experience. This sense of disappointment and shock following the birth is sometimes described as birth trauma.

There is any number of ways in which certain circumstances can trigger birth trauma. One cause is having to have a caesarian section instead of a natural birth. With a natural birth there might be a need for an episiotomy or perhaps you may find your baby’s life is in distress. Perhaps you feel totally out of control or are experiencing extreme pain. All of these can be contributory factors to birth trauma.

One advantage of being able to cope with birth trauma is being able to recognize the signs. Some of the signs are:-

- going into panic mode when you are reminded of birth

- avoiding talking about the experience to come or alternatively talking about it too much and becoming obsessed by it

- feeling angry or irritable

It is even been known to blame the partner or the baby for putting them through the trauma.

Every woman once pregnancy has been confirmed will obviously hope that she sails through the following nine months with no problems. That is human nature and fully expected.

Sadly, as well as the potential for natural causes that can complicate the delivery, a negligent medical professional can also compromise a baby’s health and cause birth trauma. Forceful delivery tactics which may include using forceps or perhaps he failure to treat or even diagnose pre-existing conditions can also lead to birth trauma.

If a child experiences birth trauma there are in fact several conditions that can arrive as a result of delivery complications.

For example there is Erb’s Palsy or Brachial Plexus Palsy. These are both conditions where the baby’s shoulder will come into contact with the mother’s pelvic bone. This will cause nerve damage to upper extremities. Hopefully this is fixable within the first two years of the baby’s life.

There is also Cerebral Palsy which is a chronic condition and is caused as a result of the baby not receiving enough oxygen during the birth. Cerebral Palsy affects an individual’s ability to co-ordinate and control the movement of the muscles.

Birth trauma can also include head trauma, paralysis and muscular defects.

So what exactly is birth trauma? When we talk about birth trauma we also mean Post Traumatic Stress Disorder occurring after childbirth. Also included are women who may not actually meet all the clinical criteria of PTSD but who will have some of the symptoms relative to the disorder.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the term acknowledged for a set of ordinary or normal reactions to traumatic, scary or bad experiences. This disorder can happen following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events. Usually we are talking about things like natural disasters or military combat but a traumatic experience can really be something like birth trauma where the threat of death or serious injury to an individual o another person close to them. Hence it is understood that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can be a consequence of birth trauma.

The Birth Trauma Association (BAT) gives total support if required to all women who have had the experience of a traumatic birth. Estimates show that in the United Kingdom alone this could possibly result in 10.000 women each year developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Furthermore as many as 200,000 more women might feel traumatised by childbirth and will develop PTSD symptoms.

Some women experience events during pregnancy, childbirth and afterwards that would define birth trauma with no problem at all. For other women it is not always the dramatic or sensational events that trigger child trauma. With them it is things like loss of control and dignity or perhaps the seemingly hostile attitudes of the people around them. The prospective mother will feel that she is not being listened to or heard.

Research that has been done into birth trauma is limited and has been largely focused on how important the delivery is. However it is fairly clear that risk factors are present for Post Natal Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that include such items as-:

- A lengthy or very painful labour

- Poor pain relief

- Feelings that you have lost control

- Traumatic delivery such as a caesarean section

- Lack of privacy or dignity

- Baby has to remain in SCBU for some reason

- Poor care post natal

- Fear for baby’s safety

- Not being listened to

- Lack of information or explanation

Finally believe it or not men can suffer from birth trauma. If they witness a traumatic birth then they may also feel traumatised.
